Johnny Apodaca
Johnny Apodaca of Pacific Grove considers himself a quintessentially California painter. His landscapes belong to the tradition of plein air painting that was popularized by the early California painters. Johnny's goal is to "revisit the old tradition of landscape painting with new, contemporary sensibilities."

Apodaca's work favors what he calls the "heroic and dramatic" qualities of the landscape. He considers his work representational, but gives himself an artist's prerogative to paint purple trees with a yellow background with generous brush strokes and "scrumbling," a technique in which strokes are partially erased. His use of color creates the impression of scintillating light.

His artistic training started at McNay Art Institute in San Antonio, Texas and then to Los Angeles, where he cut his teeth on abstract expressionism in the 50s. His works now can be seen in many corporate and private collections throughout the United States.
