About these San Francisco Restaurant paintings:

Several years ago I was working on a commissioned painting of Townhall Restaurant, a wonderful old two-story building tucked between high-rise offices in downtown San Francisco. While working on this painting family and friends said, “If you‘re doing Townhall Restaurant, you’ll have to paint Red‘s Java House“ or “Don‘t forget to look at Bizou”. The list of restaurants grew, and I photographed what I considered the most colorful (literally), funky and charming. San Francisco is full of them.

I’d also become the lucky recipient of stacks of cigar boxes when my former studio mate (whose husband frequented Cuba and loved cigars) cleaned house. Over the years, many artists have painted on cigar boxes (Diebenkorn my favorite), but since my usual format is large canvases and loose brushwork, the boxes just sat. Then I went to Vermont Studio Center for an intensive painting residency. I packed all my paints, brushes and dusty cigar boxes. I returned with the beginnings of what you see here. What I loved about working on the cigar box lids was using the lid itself: the label showing through, the grooves in the box, the various wood textures and colors.

My intent is a nostalgic tribute to San Francisco.

Many thanks to Todd Elliot for his creative framing ideas.
