S. C. Yuan

S.C. Yuan was born in Hangchow, China in the province of Chekiang. At an early age he displayed a keen interest in art and studied drawing while in high school. He attended the Fine Arts Academy of the Central University in Nanking. There, he studied with Xu Beihong and received training in the French academic manner of painting. Xu Beihong was one of China?s greatest early twentieth-century painters. Although taught in the Western manner, later Yuan would remark that he was also influenced by the Chinese paintings surrounding him and that their delicacy and emphasis upon line were in his blood. He came to America in 1950 and, after a visit to the Monterey Peninsula, decided that this was where he wished to make his home.
Although there were major exhibitions of Yuan?s work during the war years, the 1960s was a period of numerous shows, awards and the beginning of his travels to Europe and Mexico. Many of his works were painted on these trips. His last one-man show was held in Carmel in 1974. It was at that time he took his own life and died on September 6, 1974.
S.C. Yuan's subtle, but colorful palette, vigorous brush strokes, thick impasto and delicate washes are part of the legacy he left. A dynamic, charismatic man and one of California?s finest artists, he once said, ?Art should have something to say to the viewer and only then is it honest art, which has permanent value.? His art has something to say.
